David’s Story

Twice after reaching age 62, David experienced a doctor shortage.

His long-time physician in Altus retired. Then the one David found in Lawton as a replacement closed his practice. Searching for another physician, he was often told, “the doctor is not accepting new patients.”

It was a very trying time.

David really needed prescription renewals. It was quite unsettling to not know if he would find another doctor whom the insurance company would approve. Urgent Care, his only other option, was satisfactory, but not satisfying.

“Fortunately, someone suggested Dr. Brian Birdwell, and he accepted me. Our relationship since has been strong. We had a year or two together before he chose the Direct Primary Care business model.”

Access and response by telephone, text message, e-mail for my medical needs have been prompt. They are worth a lot.

“As a Medicare-aged patient, I realized that paying an extra fee for Direct Primary Care is solely my option. I could take the insurance company assigned doctor and pay less, but he or she might be less thorough and might be gone next year, too.

“I felt it was in my best interest to build on the relationship with Dr. Birdwell. Access and customer service have been outstanding. I have the doctor I like, and one whom I believe cares about me. Doctor-patient relationships are important to good health.

“Access and response by telephone, text message, email for my medical needs have been prompt. They are worth a lot.”

Managing the Costs of Health Care with Medicare

About the costs now:

“I prefer Medicare Advantage (Part C) because it is similar to the plans that my employers have offered. It includes primary care and local and national in-network specialist doctors, plus hospitalization along with the Part D drug plan. I pay about $145 monthly for Humana Medicare Advantage and Direct Primary Care membership at MainStreet Clinic. plus I pay an additional $20 monthly for optional vision and dental services. I think this Direct Care-Medicare Advantage strategy is better and less expensive than a Medigap supplemental policy and other choices that I know about. It works for me.

“I know costs are important for all of us. Times are tough. But access, responsiveness, patient-physician relationship and timely customer service to remain healthy are more important to me.

“If you are wondering what the options are, I wholeheartedly recommend you consider Dr. Birdwell’s Direct Primary Care clinic.”
